Each year, on the last Monday in May, Americans pause on Memorial Day to remember and honor the men and women who lost their lives in military service.

For Martin Marietta’s West Division Military & Veterans Community (MVC) chapter, this observance means continuing a profound tradition by participating in the annual flag placement event at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Serving as a reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the need to honor them, this volunteer event has grown steadily in recent years, with participants finding it to be both a somber and impactful moment of reflection.

“As a combat U.S. Marine Corps veteran, it was my pleasure to volunteer to place American flags at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona for our nation’s fallen heroes,” said Outside Sales Representative Stacey O’Connell during the event. “Most of our veterans are volunteers, and it’s important to honor Memorial Day by walking amongst them and being thankful for our nation’s freedom.”

This year’s event stood out as one of the group’s most successful volunteer initiatives to date, with more than 40 participants coming together in support.

“Our participation as Martin Marietta provided a strong presence and reinforced our commitment to community engagement while honoring our fallen heroes,” said Administrative Services Senior Assistant Monica Davoli, who annually helps organize Martin Marietta’s volunteer presence at the event. “It was such a wonderful turnout and an amazing event where we came together as a team to honor those who fought and died for our country.”

After the flag placement, attendees grabbed breakfast and networked with other ONE team members in the division.

For many, the overall experience was deeply personal, offering a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the connections built through participation in the event.

“It was really nice to gather with family and co-workers, and the act of placing flags on the graves of our veterans who fought for us was rewarding,” said Mixer Driver Calvin Pink. “Then, to gather later, share a meal, mingle and get to know people I had never met before, that was a great experience.”

Organizers said the effort highlighted MVC’s mission to provide professional development, community support and relevant resources that empower military members, veterans and their families to build fulfilling careers.
