Monthly Clean-Up Program Goes Beyond Safety
On the first Monday of each month, it’s not uncommon to see Martin Marietta employees in the Mid-Atlantic Division working hard to tidy up their work places – whether it’s cleaning up an area in the quarry or a tool shed, painting entrances or planting flowers. This collective team effort, known as “Monday Morning Mop-Up” is led by Division President John Tiberi and Human Resources & Safety Director Carlton Brady.
Creating a sense of pride in the appearance of one’s workplace, motivating the team and meeting inspection goals are just a few of the objectives of Monday Morning Mop-Up. Besides the aesthetic appeal of a clean workspace, this program also contributes to the overall safety and well-being of employees – a critical value at Martin Marietta.
Plant managers in the Mid-Atlantic Division often prioritize and select which area of their respective plants they’d like to focus on for each Monday Morning Mop-Up, and submit photos and descriptions of their teams cleaning up. Although all employees at each month’s winning plant receive a $25 Visa gift card, the real reward comes in the form of bragging rights.
“Everybody wants their site to win, and when you have people calling to ask ‘Have you guys selected a winner?’ you know you’re dialed into something,” said Brady. “It’s not about the $25 gift card reward. It’s about the friendly competition among employees – the ‘We want to win. Look at what we did!’”
