For the sixth consecutive year, a team from Martin Marietta took part in the National MS Society’s “Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride” in North Carolina to raise money for multiple sclerosis research.

Steve Whitt, the Company’s director of environmental services and the team’s organizer, said the group of 35 bicyclists trained for more than nine months to complete the two-day ride, which required participants to bike between 30-100 miles a day during the weekend of Sept. 12-13.

Whitt said the team raised nearly $18,000 this year, bringing the amount of money they’ve raised for the MS Society over six years to about $120,000.

“We’ve got a good cross section of Martin employees who went down there with us and they just impress the heck out of you,” Whitt said. “If you totaled the miles each of us rode that weekend, it would take you from here to the Pacific Ocean and then some. It’s quite the physical feat.”
