South Metro Ready Mix Helps Soldier Battling Cancer

Members of the South Metro Ready Mix District sales team in San Antonio stepped up for a wounded veteran battling cancer over the holidays, raising nearly $3,200 for his medical expenses.

U.S. Army Ranger Staff Sgt. Roger Garcia earned a Purple Heart after being wounded in Iraq in 2003. After serving a second tour in the country, he retired with more than two decades of service under his belt.

In civilian life, the father of three still found time to volunteer with charitable organizations assisting veterans. Then came the cancer.

In recent years, Garcia has undergone radiation, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. While his cancer is currently in remission, his medical expenses have accumulated.

District Sales Manager Adam Schexnayder said that upon learning of Garcia’s plight, the sales team consisting of Roland Gonzales, Colby Jobes and Sandy Garcia leaped into action, soliciting donations from their customer base and then raffling off those donations as prizes. All money raised was given to the soldier’s family.

“A special thanks to all of the Martin family who helped make this event a great success,” Schexnayder said.
