Ames Mine Teams with Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America awarded more than 450 Mining in Society badges after a recent event at Ames Mine in Iowa.

A group of about 20 Company employees aided by Des Moines district staff welcomed the Scouts and Scout leaders and provided nearly 530 tours of the mine during what is believed to be one of the largest such Boy Scout events in the country, said Area Production Manager Scotty Gerbes.

Martin Marietta teaches a group of Boy Scouts about mining.

The weekend included a campout at a local church and instructional sessions with Martin Marietta, several of its contractors, the Iowa Limestone Producers Association and state officials.

Gerbes said the event provided a substantial boost to the Boy Scouts’ Mid-Iowa Council, which now oversees more Mining in Society badge holders than any other Boy Scout Council in the United States.
