Former Martin Marietta Chief Executive Officer and current Board Member Steve Zelnak has been elected to the Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame.
One of three industry executives comprising the Hall’s 2016 class of honorees, Zelnak will be formally inducted at a black-tie ceremony on March 20 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Zelnak joins 19 others honored by Pit & Quarry since its Hall of Fame was introduced in 2013. Inductees are selected by a group of peers from a pool of nominees submitted by industry experts and readers of the magazine.
“There are few people more deserving of this honor than Steve Zelnak,” noted Martin Marietta Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Ward Nye. “His tireless efforts on behalf of our company, and our industry, cannot be overstated. We would not be the company we are today without his many contributions.”
Joining the Martin Marietta Corporation in 1981 as vice president of planning and business development for its aggregates company, Zelnak was appointed president of the aggregates business in 1982. He was elected an officer of the parent corporation in 1989 and promoted to president of the Materials Group in 1991.
In 1994, as president and chief executive officer, Zelnak led the process as Martin Marietta Materials became a publicly traded corporation. He was elected chairman of the company’s board of directors in 1997, a position he held until 2014.
During his time as chairman and CEO, Zelnak grew revenues from $450 million to more than $2.2 billion. He oversaw more than 70 acquisitions and significantly broadened the Company’s geographic footprint.
