Granite Canyon Quarry: Getting the Loadout in the Western Division
Granite Canyon Quarry is a unique operation where
the history and spirit of the west meet the latest technology to shape
the future. Located between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming, the quarry
supplies ballast stone to two main customers, the Union Pacific and Burlington
Northern Santa Fe railroads. In addition to the railroads, material is shipped for
commercial projects in Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska.
The plant uses an automatic rail loadout system – combining chutes, bins, conveyor belts and continuously moving trains – to load up to 2,400 tons of material per hour. The theory of an automatic loading system is simple – keep the train moving as underground feeders supply stone to high-speed conveyors that weigh the rock and feed the loadout.
