The Broadway Bridge over the Willamette River is in the heart of the Portland harbor and is a vital structure to vehicular traffic and the river's marine traffic. The historic bridge carries four lanes of traffic with an average daily volume of 30,000 vehicles. Originally constructed in 1911- 1912, the bridge is the largest of only three Rall bascule bridges remaining in the United States. With each of the double-leaf bascule spans measuring 140’, the Broadway Bridge is also the seventh longest bascule bridge in the world. Considering this project’s demand for light weight and rapid installation, the Broadway Bridge is an ideal application of FRP decks.

In August 2004, DuraSpan® replaced the bascule span's worn steel grating, which had caused significant safety concerns. Lightweight FRP deck was optimal solution because it minimized re-work of bascule drive system and offered improved skid resistance. The DuraSpan decks were pre-fabricated into modular panels (approx 370 sq ft each) for installation by forklifts. Pre-fabrication allowed all FRP panels to be set in two shifts with miscellaneous FRP tasks completed in 3rd shift. The Bascule span was ready for opening on 4th day. Broadway Bridge is now one of the largest FRP decks in the world.
