Reclaiming and restoring the land is an integral part of Martin
Marietta's environmental commitment. One such project, Raccoon River
Park, has been called the "crown jewel" of the West Des Moines,
Iowa, park system. After decades of mining sand along the Raccoon
River, Martin Marietta donated a portion of the land to the state
and the city to be used as a park. Offering a lake, a boat ramp,
a swim beach, a nature trail, a softball complex and an expanded
source of water for the city, Raccoon River Park is one of the most
active, prized recreational sites in the area.
"Raccoon River Park is the crown jewel of the West Des Moines
Park system. It has become the gathering spot for the community.
This tremendous asset has improved the quality of life for all our
citizens."
