In recent weeks, Martin Marietta Materials has been the victim of identity theft and check fraud. Fraudulent checks that have the Martin Marietta Materials name, officers signatures, and other information are being presented for payment through various methods across the nation. In some instances, checks are being mailed through various overnight shipping services to purchase goods over the Internet; these checks are written for an amount larger than the actual cost of the goods being sold. The perpetrators then have requested that the excess cash be returned either to them through a number of wiring services or to a fictitious business such as a shipping company. In other instances, the victims are being asked to complete an online survey. Upon completing the survey, they are being mailed a check and instructed to keep a portion of the payment and send the remainder to an address provided. In still other instances, the victims are receiving checks accompanied by letters stating that they have won a lottery prize and are asking the victims to send money to cover taxes for the lottery payment.
Martin Marietta Materials will NOT send you a check and ask you to wire back money under any circumstances. We are working with our banks, Federal, State and Local authorities to aid in the investigation and, hopefully, arrest of the perpetrators.
What should you do?
If you receive one of these checks, PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE CHECK IS NOT VALID AND WILL NOT BE HONORED. Don’t deposit the check – report it! We would appreciate it if you would immediately contact Martin Marietta Materials at 919-510-4785 to give us as much information as possible about the communications with and identifying information about the people giving you the check.
Thank you for your cooperation.
